Write a few lines and help ge a rock novel translated!

9 years 10 months ago - 9 years 10 months ago #156239 by Anna Gable
As you might know, I've released a rock novel. It's in Swedish, but I'm currently looking for an agent, to make a translation (I can't afford that on my own). To make this, I must collect voices, lots of voices, who would love to read a rock novel in English, or some other language. I think you ppl here are the right sort to help me out! Ti can tell you that Lisbeth Hellman, Dave's mother, read it and said "I cried so much, there is really a resemblance to David and his life, even if it's a fictional story. I really love it!" She read the 618 pages in 4 days only, because she liked it so much.

So if you want to help me, if you want a rock novel in a language you can understand, please send me a PM here (or just answer this post) with your name (first name will do fine if you don't want to put your full name on, but no nicks) and in what country you live, and say something like this:
"I'd love to read "Ghosts, Drugs & Rock n'Roll" in .... (enter your choice of language). It would be great if Anna Gable's rock novel also could reach rock lovers outside of Sweden".
Of course you can use your own words, this is only a sample. Nothing longer is needed.

I need this because it's rare to get agents to take on translations from an author who only has released one book, so I must have all the help in the world to make it happen. I can't afford to make a translation of my own, it costs at least 15.000€ so instead I hope for an agent to discover it. Nothing gets discovered without hard work though, and that's where you all come in!

I'd be super honoured for your help, and if I get a translation, I'll put a Thanks page in it with all the names of ppl who has helpt me make it happen! Together we can take it to the stars! Show that Crash fans unite when someone needs it, and please help!

And if you like to help and spread this even more, share my Facebook status from www.facebook.com/Zorf.se

Thanks in advance, you rock!
/Anna Gable

PS There is a small bit about (not of) the book translated at the homepage, in English and in French, to give you an idea what it's all about. Visit www.zorf.se to check it out! (The flags to the left of the page changes language.)

Hiya, i don't wish to butt in, but... have you considered finding your own translator? There's a lot of freelancers out there, usually writers or editors themselves, who also do translations. Yeah ok, 600+ pages is a lot, but you'll definitely find a cheaper quote than 15K euro's. That's just... mind bogglingly expensive! Ask around, compare quotes. Check out twitter as well, often there are topics #askagent

Though of course it should go without saying to check out someone's credentials before believing everything a stranger says on twitter ;p But #askagent often gets big name agents giving advice.

Hope that helps! I think you'd be able to move forward a lot more quickly if you translate first.

Haha. " I don't wish to butt in but.." even a cheaper translater, freelancer or not can't do it for nothing. Ever tried living from writing? It's a poor ass life man, and even a cheap translator would still be a lot for any artist to pay on it's own. Also, Maybe thats an opportunity, but shouldn't she at least tyr to go the other way first? it doesn't really cost her money just time and a little help.
I've read the rough translated first 3 chapters of this book and it is good. It would be really gret if at least some coul take the what, 1 minute? it takes to write that couple of lines to help a long time forum member out :)

yes, I'm a writer. That's why I'm trying to help.
That translation fee quoted is just astronomical. Everything, including translating, is a lot more competitive than that.

Anna, are you on Goodreads? That's a useful platform to build interest :)

i have thought about it, but as I said above, it costs more than 150000€ and I don't have that kind of money, not even close, it's like half a year's salary. That's why I need this so bad from you. I hope the Crash people can proove to be good friends in this!

PS I've put up a "Thanks"-page on my homepage as well. Since I don't know if there ever will be a translation, I think it's fine to show the names of all who support anyway, because I'm very thankful! I'll try to update it once a day if there are any names to add.

Miaa-Z One more thing: I have actually three ways.
1. Swedish stranslator - I pay, (but I can't afford that, but it's a way if money is not the matter)
2. Swedish agent - they fix the translation. It's hard to get, especially for one with only one book on the market, but it's worth a try.
3. English agent - they fix the selling, but I still have to have the translation before contacting them, because if they like the book, they'll want to move fast

This is things I've learned from asking around, talking to ppl who knows a lot about publishing here. So both 1 and 3 unfortunately is out of reach, because it's probably easier, and if the book becomes big abroad, I'll get more money myself, because then the translator is payed and a closed chapter. If I do it as in 2, the translator will want some percent of the selling in that language, so of course it's a bad deal if the book goes big. But since I can't do 1 och 3, there is no other way really. I'm very serious about this, and I've also talked a lot to ppl in the music business, because some things are so similar, just to get ideas how to do this. I'm extremely thankful for all ideas, don't get me wrong now, so keep them coming, along with the small lines that I can use, I'm very happy for everyone who's taking time to think about this and wants to help out. I just have to tell which ways I've already looked at.

I'm trying this because I burn as much for the written word as the Crashguys burn for making music. I've been on stage too, I've toured Japan etc. but it did not turn big. This is not a second best, it's simply what I burn for right now. But I know exactly the feeling about burning for the music too, and since I've _almost_ been there, I want even more to make it this time, in this way. It's not about getting famous or making lots of money, nobody does today anyway, it's about the joy when someone says "Hey, I read your novel and I cried several times, but it felt good doing so!", that's why. And that's why I want ppl who don't read Swedish (after all it's only 9 millions who do) to get a change to feel that way too!

But sure you can. You can say you want your forreign friends to read it, many have done that, and they're on the "thanks"-page too. And of course I'll be happy if you want to read it :) cheapest is to get it on line from www.zorf.se, but it's also at SF_bokhandeln or Bokia etc.

Okay:) In that case:

I'll by the book after my exams if I have enough money, seems to be a perfect "relaxing in the sun"-book:)
