So, the first part of the movie trilogy based on JRR Tolkiens story "The Hobbit" will soon hit the cinemas. I know some of us members here are more thrilled than others about this, so I thought it would be nice to discuss it a bit.

Are you going to watch it?

hsgadjljoosajhdjksahkjdgdsajh!!!!!! hgggg!!

Yes! I'm rolling over in excitement!!!!
I have my first day cinema ticket ready and count the days!

I tried the longest time not to care, because I was so scared of being disappointed, but hell, I have 4 versions of LOTR (the book), and 2 of the DVDs here, I have every movie related and otherwise Toliken book I could find, I've read everything that is availiable in german by tolkien, and started to read the rest in english, although it's hard, his not so puplic works are pretty tough for non native speakers.

You thought I'm a Crashdiet fanatic, well my love for middleearth beats this, no bullshitting!

I swallowed the books, I must have read LOTR over 30 times by now.
The movies had a huuge impact on me when it came out, and watching all those production videos afterwards is one of the biggest reasons why I study visual communication now. The attention to detail, perfection of visuals according to context, is overwhelming.
Seriosuly, The guys working at WETA Workshop and WETA Digital are my very personal biggest heroes.

Thanks for this thread, I didn't want to make one, i thought I'd scare everyone off with my excitement.
Only thing is, I STILL have noone to go to cinema with. :/

I will definitly watch the movies in cinema on new year's day, like the LotR movies, no matter what. I got deeply excited when I heard that Peter Jackson will direct the Hobbit films as well. He put so much heart in LotR; seems to be pretty serious about that middle earth stuff. The crew in front and behind the camera was great too. The trilogy really looked like it was shot on location in that fantasy world.

I did start to read the books once, but got bored during the second one and never finished. Maybe I'll get through them one day. I think I listened to them as an earbook some time ago, along with the hobbit, when I was really ill. Actually two times if I remember correctly. But I can't concentrate on earbooks so luckily there's much that can be refreshed in my memory during the movies.

Grew to love the whole fantasy genre through Peter Jackson's LotR.

//edit: Can't wait for the special editions even though I haven't seen the cinematic versions yet. (Regarding The Hobbit that is.)

OH YES!!!

Have been so excited for this movie ever since the first rumours about Peter Jackson "doing" The Hobbit came out, and that was a looong time ago :P

Waited out in minus 14 degrees for three hours to get the premiere tickets and I'm very glad I did :)
On monday and tuesday me and some of the friends I'm going to the movie with will sit down at my house and watch the whole trilogy  Extended version of course...to quote Elijah and Dominic:

D - "So we put on The Return Of The King and..
E - "Extended!"
D- "Extended of course!"
E - "Obviously"
D - "Obviously, it's the only way to go!"

And 23:59 later that Tuesday night it will be time for the magic, can't wait!

And here's basically EVERYTHING that has been released from the actual movie so far, for those who wants/dares to see it ;)

"The goblins attack"

"Meeting gollum"

I definitely going to see it. I simply must. I´m a huge fan of those books and films. I nearly know them by heart. Near to my place there is a cinema that is showing every Year all 3 movies of the lord of the rings in one night :). It becomes tradition for me to go there ;).

The only thing that sucks is that they splitted the movie. I mean: The Lord of the rings were actually 6 big books and they put it into 3 films and now this one book also in films O.o? Where is the sense in that except for making more money -.-.

I think it's great that there will be three parts. "Where's the sense in that except for making more money?" Well, maybe that you'll get much more of the whole book, plus some from other ones. Ususally people complain alot about stuff being left out when there's a movie based on a book. But then when people finally gets three movies out of their favourite book they complain about it too? Where's the sense in that? :)

Yeah, you´re right. I said it a little bit wrong. I meant in comparision to the Lord of the Rings. I guess they wouln´t make three parts of it, if the Lord of the Rings were not such a success. I´m just afraid that they will add stuff that wasn´t at all in the book and to wait long till the next part is coming out XD.

I don't quote understand the people who say theres only 3 movies because of the money.
There is no guarantee that they will be successful. Do you have any idea what a HUUUUUGE!!! risk this is for all people involved?
it can go wrong aswell, and then it's in before shitstorm for everyone. I mean they didn't make those movies as other trilogies where you can break it off after the first failed, they mke them all together.
And as for "putting things into it that weren't in the book", they did that with LOTR too and they did a great job to get the topics across.
They also said they will put parts of The silmarillion and other Middleearth Tales in it too.

It's time for people to understand that, while based on some books, the thinsg Peter and Fran do with those movies is still art on it's own and very independent as such.#It's a group of fans making their favourite world into a movie.
Don't like it don't watch it, my two cents.

Yes they say that they have, but from other J.R.R. TOLKIEN books like Silmarillion.

I remember having read they would fill the story with additional storylines and such (for example when Gandalf leaves the group), but with no material of other Tolkin books like Silmarillion 'cause they don't have legal rights for them, just for The Hobbit and LotR. So there's new stuff to expect.

And I agree with mrs. viper that changing things in adaptions isn't a bad thing. Movies and books are different mediums, so they have a different approach regarding storytelling. While in a book one person tells the story, making a film involves countless people, writers, directors, actors, designers, etc., whose interpretations of the story have to interact. It's a very organic affair. Things like building tensions or athmospheres work very different if you have to show what's happening or if you describe it. And in writings you can place subplots and minor characters more easily, because the reader can take his time, while it gets harder and harder for the audience to concentrate the longer and messier a movie is.

And the people involved in The Hobbit did a great job adapting with LotR, holding on to the main story and visualizing the world alike, so I've huge expectations (especially after what I saw in the production videos).

I read that somewhere too, but I doubt it.
I mean for exemple Radagast isn't really mentioned in the Hobbit right?

EDIT: but in the appendix of TLOR, how foolish of me.
even so, they won't "make up" something totally off. I mean they all have read all those stuff, they won't completely turn it around, and there actually are a ton of hints in the appendix...

Yeah, I expect some new material following the narrative of the content available. Is there much in the appendices regarding events during the The Hobbit timespan?

It's funny how that movie evolved. I think it was when Del Toro was still directing the project that he said, they had to add lots of new stuff, 'cause the book was too short, and a second, all made up, movie was planned which should cover the time between The Hobbit and LotR. In development they skipped that idea, admitting that The Hobbit has enough details for two movies, which eventually became three.

Did anyone see the two british middle earth fan films The Hunt for Gollum and Born of Hope? Well done stuff, based on hints and appendices of LotR, with looks and design similiar to the Peter Jackon adaptions.

well there is quite a bit of hints towards what happened between the hobbit and LOTR.
like the hunt for gollum for exemple although that is later. But gandalf starts to search for knowledge about the rings, the council, with Saruman still included cahses Sauron out of the dark Forest and destroys dol Guldur etc....

i keep mixing up what exactly is in the appendices and what in other bokks but I belive ther are quite a few hints.

Like Born of Hope (yes, I've watched those) is absically made upon like 5 sentences. and it still works, so I blieve it could work quite well.
I mean there must be alot haoppening surrounding the council who are quite busy at the time. Saruman learns about where the ring to lost, as does Sauron for exemple, Sarumna starts his rivality with Gandalf (without Gandlaf knowing) etc... there is alot of story set out for what later comes.
