Working out?

Working out? was created by Laura Victory
I've noticed among people with the same kind of taste in rock / metal, it's kinda uncool to do sports or work out in the gym (in my circle of friends at least). For some reason mental activity is valued much higher then fysical activity. And having to work out to stay in shape is considered ... embaressing or something. But for me, with my body type and getting older and stuff, it's getting kind of necessary to work out regularly nowadays. (How much I've hated sports in the past.) And now it has become a fun way to spend my spare time too, you know: getting stronger, fitting into more clothes, having more energy. Do you work out/ do sports and what does it mean to you? Or not your cup of tea?

Well no offence but in the case your friends are stupid. Why would your music taste stop you from a certain activity, haha that is.... wierd. And your mind really clears up when/after working out so mental activity might aswell be same thing.

I go the the gym 3 times and run 3-4 times every week. :)

Well, it's not like they disapprove or look down on it, it's just not a regular thing to do. I have a feeling a couple of them would like to be fysically more active themselves, but they just feel ashamed to put themselves in sportswear and work their ass of among all those people who are already slim, fit and buff. We live in a big city with a lot of university students aka very young, fit, attractive, almost model-like guys and girls. I know the feeling, I felt really huge and stupid when I started out working out. I don't know yet what's the exact correlation with their music taste, maybe I just have a lot of metalminded friends!

But anyways; you work out a lot! Three times running and working out in the gym! Good for you! Why so much and how do you keep yourself going? I have difficulty doing body pump three times and body combat twice! :=D

Haha, exactly what I would say...

You know, when you work out hard your brain get's some rest - that's the best part of it. To me, physical excercise is like meditation, or therapy. Finally some peace of mind.

I've done some heavy workout and tried different diets for the last few years and I plan to keep it this way, as I still wanna be able to tour when I'm 70-80! :)

I am to lazy to work out enought. The only work outs I do reguarly is riding and hoolahooping.
I've been riding for like 10 years now, and thats a great work out. But since I dont have my own horse, I only ride once a week on lessons. But I am a lot in the stable outside of that, and often run and walk a lot. Since the ponies I take care of is too small for me to ride
The hoolahooping (Im not even sure if its called that? Maybe its rockring? Haha I have no idea) is something I do everyday for like 20 minutes. I really like it, its fun and I can do it while watching tv or whatever. Its also fun to dance  My ring is 1,5 kg, so when I first started I had the worst bruises ever. I had up to twelve bruises on my hip the first two months xD
I also try to walk and stuff, but I have to get better on that. Maybe its easier when the summer comes

Well, I actually enjoy it. I think that is the most important thing. It's so so so much easier if it doesn't feel like a must to work out, but that you actually want it.

Also I need it because I've got pretty bad self-esteem, but that's another story. :P

I think enjoying it is necessary if you plan to keep it up for longer than 2 weeks or so :P. It's like a gym in january - the place is packed, because of everyone's new years resolutions. In feb-march the place is empty again :). If you don't truly enjoy working out, never buy a 12 month gym membership card :P

Michelle Obama is hoolahopping as well and has a fantastic body for a 45 year 48 year old ( :O ) mother of two. So hoolahooping may be the perfect way to stay in shape! :=D

If have always enjoyed working out, but meeting my fitness regime recently has become much more complicated after changing work, residence and gym. I have to visit three different gyms now and I have to travel a lot longer from home-work-gym. So sometimes I choose sleep above fysical activity... ;) But last week I finally succeeded compiling an effective regime out of the three different group work-out scedules! That will help me a lot to get back on track again.

Nice to see by the way a lot of you experience a mental advantage as well. I like working out straight after work because it clears up my head after a long day. If I don't work out first, I take home all the shit from work and get very cranky!

Do you set certain goals for yourselves?

I don't know how anybody goes to a gym, haha. I know you don't exactly have to interact with anyone, but I'd just be too shy/embarrassed to ever go.

This. I honestly hate sports. I was never good at it, in school it was plainly humiliating because i was so bad at it, but I eventually discovered it's the only thing that keeps me sane. I suffered from insomnia pretty bad for while, and it was working out or go on heavy medication.
I still don't work out much because I honestly hate it too much, but when I feel restless or angry or feel like my head explodes any second I go out and run or go rollerblading until I collapse and it really helps.
For going to the gym I have to agree with Xilaii, it would be way to embarrassing, because everyone else would be tons better. It would just be humilation like in school all over again.

Same here. I'd feel very uncomfortable, like everyone would start laughing at me because I'm not the strongest guy so to say :P.

You really shouldn't be embarrassed going to the gym. As I said earlier I've been there quite a lot now, and yes, there are many beginners. But it's nothing wierd with that, in fact it's just fun to be asked how something works or such.

The only thing I find embarrassed are people who are beginners but struggles with being seen as "professionals", when they load on lots of weights and performe the movement wrong so they hurt themselves instead. That kind of behavior is the only thing that is frowned upon really. :P

There are also times when you can get help from a instructor the first time you are around, just to feel more comfortable. :)

That for me would be one of the worst parts, haha. I can't even explain why. I guess it's just super-awkwardness and embarrassment. There's no way in my mind that I can even imagine the whole experience could be positive.

It would feel like a job interview, but instead of 'can I work for you?'' it would be like 'Can I use your stuff?'

... yeah. I know I'm crazy :(

I felt really uncomfortable too the first weeks. Every other girl looked like a aerobics instructor to me and I just felt like the fat, sweaty girl in an ugly, old t shirt, trying to move convincingly on a cross trainer. :=D

But I've learned no one is really looking at you, cause as soon as the earpluggs are in, everybody is in his own little world. And even if they do look at you they won't judge you as long as you are enthusiastic and not ashamed of asking for help. Asking for help is really a great way to get in contact with other people at the gym.

Really, the akwardness disappears very fast! Don't let that hold you back from clearing up your head, if that's what you need! Working out is really a medication for your mind and by that for your body too.

But do you all also follow a certain diet? And do you set certain goals like loosing a certain amount of weight?

No, because I know myself so well that I'm sure I would have messed up. But I am trying to eat just a little healthier, and stay away from the most unhealthy stuff in the week. Like chocolate, cakes and that kind of things. And think a bit about when I eat, and what I eat for dinner and stuff. But I eat candy and other notsohealthythings in the weekend, cause I know I would have done it anyway xD
As for the weight, I dont really care that much for it. Of course, when I stepped on the weight the other day and saw that I had lost 10 kgs since my highest weight, I got happy. But I would rather see the results on the body than on the weight.

At first it's embarrasing and a bit humiliating and confronting as well. (Like: "Djeezzz, I'm out of breathe that fast???") But you do feel better already at the end of the session. You feel really tired, so really deserve a big sandwich and that nice hot shower feels amazing! Everything feels amazing after you have challenged yourself and you made it! That's the best feeling in the world. And every little worry in your head has been pushed aside for a while while focussing on your body and seems so much easier after that. ( That's why I think working out is medication for both body and mind). And that feeling only gets better after you keep going and you get fitter, stronger and more at ease with yourself.
